Reception
At Cross Lane Primary School, we are wholly committed to providing children in the Early Years with a robust, purposeful and engaging Early Years’ experience, that creates the foundation for a lifelong love of learning. Our aim is that all children at Cross Lane leave the Early Years feeling inspired, with secure social, emotional and academic skills.
In the Early Years, there are seven areas of learning. These areas are made up of three Prime Areas and four Specific Areas:
Prime Areas: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal Social and Emotional Development
Specific Areas: Mathematics, Literacy, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design

Read Write Inc.
Children in Reception are taught to read using Read Write Inc. phonics. For further information, please visit the 'reading' page.
SongDrawing
Songdrawing is a multi-sensory form of activity in which singing, drawing, movement and story-telling are combined in a holistic and interactive process, and drawings are conjured up by joyful drawing songs.
Squiggle While You Wiggle
Children in Early Years develop their physical development skills through dance and drawing. The programme begins in Nursery and children continue this into Reception.
Squiggle uses neurological and physiological movements to create marks. The ‘how to Squiggle’ is beautiful in its fun and simplicity.
- Wiggle me into a Squiggler is the first stage and is designed for the early stages of mark making and physical development used in writing.
- Squiggle Whilst you Wiggle is the next stage in early years child development and moves on to more advanced mark making and letter formation
- Squiggle me into a Writer is the final stage in our Squiggle Programme taking the child through cursive mark making and letter formation.
